BASIC SETTINGS TO DO AFTER INSTALLING WORDPRESS WEBSITE

After you’ve completed your wordpress installation using your cpanel from your hosting company and your website is ready to start accepting content, there are basic settings you should do so as to avoid hassles, optimize your site and give your site a great look and experience.

The following are basic settings you must set after installing your wordpress website

Site name and site tagline
Jetpack activation
Akismet activation
Permalinks structure setting
Social sharing buttons

The above are the main settings you need to do after installing wordpress and we are going to take them one after the other.

1#. Site name and site tagline

Site name and tagline simply means the title of your website and it description. You need to set this to let people know about your site and what you are up to.

How to set this up

Go to your wordpress admin by logging to www.yourwebiste.com/wp-admin

Hover your mouse on “settings” and click on “General” from the option that pop out, site your site title and tagline and click on save.

For instance my site title here is “2konlinebiz” and my tagline is “ we provide best business guide, Blogging tips, Web Development, SEO etc”. Try to be creative here and try to summarize your site objective and what your site is all about on the tagline.

2#. Jetpack activation

Jackpack is one of the finest small wordpress plugin that brings loads of great features like social media sharing buttons, Google + Profile, Email Subscription form to your website. After installing wordpress by default , it is not activated, to activate the plugine, go your Dashboard and click activate Jackpack from menus on the left hand side --> click connect to wordpress.com -->next click need an account -->next enter your email -->choose your username and password make sure you write the details down somewhere because you’ll need it latter -->then click on sign up -->you’ll be sent a confirmation email message to activate your account click on the confirmation link they sent to you from your inbox -->finally click on authorize Jackpack and you are done.

3#. Akismet Activation

Akismet is a wordpress plugin that help fight spam on your wordpress website. By default Akismet is not activated to activate it go to your wordpress dashboard, navigate to “plugins” and click “install plugins” from the options that pops out for you.

Under Akismet, click on activate, next click on settings under Akismet, then click “create a new Akismets key” Next click on “get an Akismet API key”. Click on “I already have a wordpress account” and sign in with the username and password your created ealier for Jackpack above.

After you must have sign in, click on “Authorize” scroll down and click “Sign Up” under “personal”. You’ll notice a tab with a button you can move to the left or right on the screen. With that button, you can decide how much you want to donate to Akismet. Just move the button to the left so that the amount under the tab changes to $0. Next click on “continue” .

Your Akimet API key will now be displayed. Copy the API key and click the link below it.

On the next page, click “ I already have a key” paste the API key you copied into the space provided and click “save changes” .

4#. Permalinks Settings

Permalink in wordpress is what control the address format of your site post and pages. Of all the option of permalink settings on wordpress dashboard, I prefer to choose the last one because it is very great and comes with a lot of SEO benefits.

To choose it, just go to your wordpress dashboard, point your mouse to settings at the left hand side, and click on “permalink” from the options that pop out, choose “post format” from among the options. Choosing theses permalink option give you the ability to edit your post URL on the title tab after you must have published them.

5#. Sharing Buttons and Social Media connection

Having a sharing buttons on your wordpress website helps a lot in creating some levels of constructiveness on your website. The setting of sharing button enables you to share your post automatically to different social media platform when you published any post.

All you need to do to enable sharing button is to go to your dashboard, hover your mouse on “settings” and click on“social sharing from the options that pop out. Click the icons of facebook , twitter Google +, Linkedin and others you choose and connect each to your social media account next scroll down and use the mouse to drag each of the setting icons to the tab under the icons.

6#. Widgets

Widgets are website features that are display on the side Bar of your website or blog, it can be on the footer area or at the header section of your website. Some popular widget includes email subscription form widget, recent post widget, facebook like etc.

To set any of your preferred widget login to your wodpress dashboard, go to “appearance” and click on “widgets” from the options that pop out. The active widgets are listed on the right hand side, while the inactive ones are listed on the left.

If you’d like to deactivate any widget, just drag it from the right window to the left window. And if you’d like to activate any widget, drag it from the left window to the right.

7#. Display Name

By default, your posts will be display on your website as having been published by your “username” .

So to change it, login to your dashboard, scroll to “user under your wordpress dashboard” and click on “your profile” from the options that come out. Fill in your desired display name and click on save at the down side.

8#. SEO(Search engine Optimization)

Search Engine Optimization plays a very major role on our blogging and website. You need to set up SEO properly to enable Search Engine find your blog. By default, wordpress SEO is not set though search Engine can still find your blog but it is necessary that you install a good SEO plugin to enable search engine index your site faster and the only plugin that I highly recommend is SEO plugin by Yoast. Just go to your wodpress dashboard and havour you mouse to plugin and search for SEO Plugin by Yoast, click and install it, follow the set up screen to set up the plugin on your wodpress site.

9#. Security

One of the greatest week point of wordpress is it vulnerability and week password security. You need to make sure your install a good security measure plugin on your wordpress site to prevent hackers from hacking your wordpress site. You equally need to use a very strong password to make your site fully secure from hackers and bots.
